WoW Developer Team Announces PvP Playtesting

Play With Blues and help WoW developers balance PvP for Patch 10.1
by Tit Krajnik on April 13, 2023

On Thursday, April 14, the World of Warcraft development team posted a blue post, inviting all players to join them on the Embers of Neltharion Public Test Realms (PTR) to playtest PvP content. Titled “Play With Blues”, the playtesting which will start on Thursday, will give the game developers a bit more insight into the upcoming changes and possible tuning they’ll have to implement ahead of the Patch 10.1 release.

In the eyes of many World of Warcraft players, WoW: Dragonflight is one of the best expansions to date in terms of balance, and the game developers listening to the community before adding in-game updates. We’ll ignore the chaos that ensued following the Paladin rework, but besides that mishap, the game developers have been doing an excellent job of listening to the players, and it doesn’t seem like that will change.

On Thursday, a blue post was posted, inviting all WoW players with access to Embers of Neltharion Public Test Realms (PTR) to join the game development team in random PvP battlegrounds for a playtesting session. Named “Play With Blues”, the playtesting is set to get underway at 3:00 p.m (PDT) and will give the developers better insight into the upcoming changes and their effect on the PvP.

The developers will observe and look for feedback on new and updated PvP talents and the upcoming changes to crowd control.

Of the two, the biggest modification coming to PvP with Embers of Neltharion is the changes to the crowd control. Game developers have been working on changing how crowd control works, mainly the duration of CC abilities in PvP, since September 2022, and the first steps will be noticeable in the upcoming update.

The general idea is to reduce the duration of crowd control abilities in PvP, so no CC duration would last for longer than six seconds. This way, the developers hope to keep crowd control meaningful when coordinated well while still allowing some counterplay opportunities.

There will also be some changes to the interrupt duration for certain non-PvP-specific abilities.

"We feel that this change would have minimal impact in other content due to how creature spells are generally designed, as most kicks are spent on spells that have inherent cooldowns longer than the interrupt duration. We will also be keeping extra consideration of these changes for seasonal dungeons."

"We evaluated different crowd control types and each ability within each category to determine a healthy duration for them. We do not want all similar crowd control types to necessarily be unified and want to ensure there’s unique flavor to class abilities and what makes sense within their overall kit."

Most of the announced PvP changes coming with Patch 10.1 have been well-accepted by the community, but they’ve yet to be tested appropriately.
