Blizzard Announces Combat Changes For WoW: Dragonflight Patch 10.1

More nerfs to healers?
by Tit Krajnik on April 19, 2023

On Tuesday, April 18, Blizzard announced more changes coming with World of Warcraft Dragonflight Patch 10.1. As revealed, the patch will include changes to player health points and mobs damage, buffing both by 25%.

On Tuesday, Blizzard dropped another round of PTR notes for the players, unveiling more changes to Mythic+ dungeons, classes, and tier sets, significantly shaping up the PvE meta. And out of all the changes made to the game, the most notable includes a 25% buff to player stamina and damage received – which will indirectly nerf healers.

Besides buffing players’ stamina by 25%, giving stronger shields, defensives, and stronger healing spells to compensate for the 25% damage buff, this change is a nerf to healers who have already been hit heavily in the recent patch due to self-healing of protection paladins.

Up to now, the healers were able to top up the group fairly quickly in M+ after their teammates suffered heavy damage, and even though all healers will receive buffs to their spells, topping up the entire group will now be significantly harder. The changes in Embers of Neltharion will make one-shots less frequent (due to the stamina buff) but also make healing spells less effective.

But there’s a silver lining in all that. By buffing the player’s HP, we will see fewer HP bar oscillations and intense moments when the healers had to react quickly to heal up the tank once he suffered a heavy hit. Conversely, the same change will force healers to be much busier in PvE scenarios, having to dish out constant healing and focus much less on helping with the damage.
So even though most healing spells have been buffed, the overall effectiveness of healing has been reduced.

While some players see the upcoming change as a huge nerf for healers in M+ dungeons, this change could be beneficial in raid scenarios. As stated by Team Liquid’s guild master Max “Maximum” Smith, the changes are “very, very good for the game” because he believes that healers were way too strong in raids.

Even though Maximum has a point, the supposed improvement in raiding scenarios won’t translate to M+ dungeons, which offer an entirely different experience. Whether the change is ultimately good for the game or will it turn healers into more of a mechanic than a valuable team member remains to be seen, but we won’t have to wait for long to see the changes in action.

World of Warcraft Dragonflight Embers of Neltharion is set to release on May 3 in North America and May 4 in EU.
