Plunder Returns to Warzone 2

After nine months, Plunder returns to Warzone
by Tit Krajnik on April 26, 2023

Call of Duty: Warzone’s most anticipated game mode, Plunder, is set to return on Wednesday, April 26, for the first time in nine months. As a staple game mode of Warzone 1, Plunder was removed from the game in July 2022, leading to the outcry of Warzone gamers, who rejoiced at the recent news.

A Tweet posted by Call of Duty’s official channel on Tuesday, April 25, confirmed that Plunder is back on the menu and will be re-added to Warzone as one of many changes and adjustments made in Season 3. And while this is very exciting news, it remains to be seen whether Plunder will help bring back players who have been steadily leaving Warzone over the last few months due to various issues – including the growing problem with cheaters.

If you’re new to Warzone and are unfamiliar with Plunder, here is how it works.

In Plunder, squads compete against each other to be the first to collect $1 million in a match that lasts for 30 minutes. You can find and loot cash by completing contracts, opening boxes and eliminating other players and collecting their loot. Unlike in a regular Warzone match, you can respawn infinitely and deploy with any weapons you wish rather than scavenging for loot and building a suitable loadout.

Even though Plunder is not as high-stakes as a regular Warzone match and is much more sandbox-y, it’s undeniably a very exciting game mode whose return has been greeted with open arms. But despite Plunder’s status as one of the most popular game modes in Warzone, Activision removed it nine months ago and only recently decided to re-add it to the game.

This decision might be one of many Activision has made to bring people back to Warzone, which has been steadily losing players since its release. Moreover, Warzone 2 currently has a mostly negative score on Steam and a 5/10 rating, with most players complaining about cheaters and poor weapon balance.

Still, Activision is working to resolve the issue with cheaters by implementing a new anti-cheat system created by Team Ricochet. As for weapon balance, there’s still plenty of work to be done, and with a rapidly dropping player base - which reached new lows of 80k average players in March -  not that much time left.
