Apex Legends Ranked Play Changes In Season 17

Apex Legends Season 17 will introduce many changes to the game, including several tweaks to ranked play.
by Tit Krajnik on May 02, 2023

Apex Legends Season 17 is just around the corner, and as we get closer to the launch, Respawn Entertainment revealed upcoming changes that’ll be made to Apex Legends' ranked play. Those will include overhauls to matchmaking, an anti-cheat system, and how players can earn ranked points.

Season 17 of Apex Legends will bring exciting new content to the game, including a new legend, a plethora of changes to the Firing Range, as well as changes to the map and weapon mastery system. However, out of all the updates Season 17 will bring, the most notable will come in the form of ranked play changes.

Many players felt like Apex Legends should make ranked play a bit more enjoyable and fair, and it seems like Season 17 will address that. Launching on May 9, seven updates made to ranked play will include:

  • Increased level requirement to play ranked (from 25 to 50)
  • Removal of ranked split – instead, players will have their rank reset at the start of the season and will need to complete ten provisional matches before obtaining a rank
  • Ranked points have been replaced by Ladder Points with a static match entry cost of -35
  • Matchmaking will be based on hidden MMR rather than rank
  • Players will earn bonus points based on kills, assists, and the average skill of the lobby
  • Players will not score for killing the same player more than once in the same match
  • Updated anti-cheat system

Changing how matchmaking works – now pairing players with a similar MMR rating rather than their actual rank – will lead to more balanced games where players compete against those as skilled as they are. This change intends to improve the overall experience for Apex Legends ranked play and make matches fairer.

Moreover, the developers will introduce a new anti-cheat system to combat hackers and cheaters in a bid to resolve the issue that has been plaguing Apex Legends' ranked play for a while. The new anti-cheat, in combination with a higher minimum level required to participate in ranked games (level 50), will make it harder for players to gain an unfair advantage and create new accounts after they get suspended.

Even the provisional matches every player will have to complete before entering the ranked game will address this issue, as will the changes in how scoring works – where you don’t get bonus points for killing the same player more than once in a single game. To some degree, the removal of Ranked Points and introduction of Ladder Points will make it tougher for cheaters to climb up the ladder since ranked play will be less about racking up kills and more about winning the game.

Apex Legends Season 17 will go live on May 9, 2023.
