Concrete Genie studio PixelOpus to be closed down by Sony

The developer will close on June 2nd
by Joe Wilcock on May 06, 2023

Sony has announced that PixelOpus, developers of indie titles Entwined and Concrete Genie will be shutting down on June 2nd, almost a decade after opening its doors and working in-house for PlayStation.

“PlayStation Studios regularly evaluates its portfolio and the status of studio projects to ensure they meet the organization’s short and long-term strategic objectives. As part of a recent review process, it has been decided that PixelOpus will close on June 2.”

PixelOpus gave a heartfelt goodbye themselves on Twitter in response to the news breaking.

Known for its unique approach to development, PixelOpus put a strong emphasis on art and storytelling over its short tenure, producing two solid games that reflected as much. Their first game, Entwined, wasn’t met with much fanfare upon its release in 2014 although its visual style and soundtrack laid the foundations for the company going forward. On a personal note, Entwined was the first game I ever reviewed so for what it’s worth, I thought it was pretty good in terms of what it was trying to accomplish. I will have fonder memories than most of Entwined so at least it will never be forgotten!

PixelOpus would go on to hit their stride when they released their second title, Concrete Genie, a third-person action-adventure game. The game received critical acclaim for its stunning art style, heartfelt story, and positive message about the power of creativity and friendship. Concrete Genie was nominated for several awards, including the BAFTA Games Awards for Artistic Achievement and Game Beyond Entertainment, and won the Games for Impact award at The Game Awards 2019.

Despite the success the developer would garner from their last release, commercial failure would ultimately cost the company that had shown so much promise. Unfortunately, PixelOpus was never able to reach mass audiences and although the experiences they offered were quaint and unique, they were not successful enough for Sony to continue to endorse.
