Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Breaks New Concurrent Player Record

On the eve of BLAST.tv Paris Major, CS:GO sets a new record
by Tit Krajnik on May 07, 2023

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive might be 11 years old, but it’s as popular as ever. On Saturday, May 7, just a few days before the BLAST.tv Paris Major, CS:GO broke a new concurrent player record, shattering its previous record by over 300,000 players.

As we get closer to the final Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major – before we transition to CS2 – CS:GO is doing better than ever. With just hours until the BLAST.tv Paris Major kickoff, CS:GO recorded over 1,800,000 concurrent players, smashing its previous record of 1,507,212, which was recorded just over one month ago.

While impressive, this rise in the average count is hardly shocking, seeing how CS:GO has been gaining in popularity since late 2022 and now boasts nearly double the average number of players than at this time last year (932,000). The rise in popularity started in August 2022, when CS:GO broke the 1 million peak players for only the second time since May 2021 and has since not dropped below seven digits.

At the time, the average player count sat at just over 641k but has since risen to over 900k average players, a gain of over 200k players since the turn of the year. Unsurprisingly, with those numbers, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is surpassing all other games on Steam by a significant margin, including Dota 2, which is the current second-most played game on Steam with 809k peak players, ahead of Apex Legends at 531k.

It's easy to see why the sudden rise in popularity of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and there are many factors that contributed to it. But one of the biggest includes the announcement of Counter-Strike 2, the Major, the new Anubis case, and the return of a viewer pass. And with all happening at once, it was a perfect recipe to push CS:GO to new levels.

Not only are more and more people playing CS:GO, but the game has also gained a lot of traction among viewers since the post-COVID era. Notably, over 2 million people watched PGL Stockholm Major in 2021, 1.4 million tuned in for IEM Rio Major earlier this year, and knowing that the upcoming Paris Major will be the last CS:GO Major in the history of the game, it’s more than fair to expect it to break all previous records.

The Paris Major is set to kick off on Monday, May 8, welcoming 24 teams vying for the coveted trophy and the lion’s share of the $1.250,000 prize pool. Following the tournament, the next Major will be the PGL CS2 Major Copenhagen 2024 as the first Counter-Strike 2 Major, slated for Match 17-31, 2024.
