Guerilla Games Reflects on 20 Years of Games and the Success of the Horizon Series

The franchise has achieved over 37.5 million units sold!
by Natalie Collazo on May 09, 2023

Today, Guerilla Games and Sony celebrate 20 years of titles like Killzone and Horizon Zero Dawn in a new blog post on the PlayStation website. The post, written by Studio Art & Animation Director Jan-Bart van Beek, details the early days of the studio when they had the opportunity to lead the charge with Killzone as an exclusive PlayStation title. Van Beek also discussed the early stages of what later became Horizon Zero Dawn.

The studio knew what they wants, but bringing to life what just a pitch on some paper proved to be a much more difficult endeavor than they could have ever imagined. Luckily, their vision was seen through, and the world was able to be exposed to Aloy and a world where civilization collapsed, creating tribes of primitive hunters who live among giant machines.

After the game's release, it was met with such success that before long, an almost equally as popular sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, was also released. Guerilla Games was already a relatively common name among PlayStations but now, it was one of the industry's leading developers of AAA games for the company. In fact, the same post also announced that the franchise as a whole has achieved 32.7 million in sales.

The post continues on to discuss how Aloy's adventure will be continuing in the Burning Shores DLC, but it was announced in a different blog post that the studio was working on the heroine's next adventure alongside their online project. Hopefully, we will hear more about this title as well as the future of the franchise in the coming months, especially during Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest
