According to anonymous sources within the gaming industry, this year's highly anticipated Call of Duty game will be titled Modern Warfare 3 (Modern Warfare III). Developed by Sledgehammer Games with support from various other Call of Duty studios, the game is set to be a full sequel to 2009's Modern Warfare 2 rather than a premium DLC as previously rumored. This initial news was announced by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg.

Modern Warfare 3 will include a campaign, multiplayer, zombies, and a new Warzone 2 map during the title's first season. The game's Battle Royale map, Las Almas, will be taken from the Modern Warfare 2 campaign and developed into a fully-fledged Battle Royale map for the new game. The map is set to launch during Season 1, scheduled to begin on December 5, 2023.

Zombies mode in Modern Warfare 3 will reportedly be an Outbreak 2.0 experience. Sources suggest that Activision is currently considering whether the mode should be part of the premium title or offered as a separate free-to-play experience. The potential dates for the release of the game's beta weekend for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 will run from October 6 to October 10, 2023, followed by a second beta weekend for Xbox One, Xbox Series X
