CD Projekt Red is 'Not For Sale' Amidst Rumors of Sony Acquisition

I don't think that I was the only one who was worried.

Towards the end of last week, the rumor had been circulating that Sony was in talks to purchase the developer behind The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red. The Polish company is primarily known exclusively for the titles as mentioned earlier, having developed all of the main installments of The Witcher franchise, popularizing Geralt of Rivia from a novel to a terrible movie to a game to a widely recognized Netflix show starring Henry Cavill.

The rumor about the acquisition was immediately shot down by CD Projekt Red president and CEO, Adam Kici?ski. In an earnings call after the publication of their Q1 2023 earnings, he explained that,

"Nothing has changed in our end. So, I can repeat what we have been saying throughout the years--CD Projekt is not for sale. We want to remain independent. We have, I believe an excellent strategy. Not easy to execute, for sure, but it's very exciting to follow our own path. So it's a pure rumor."

This is incredibly exciting as the developers are known for executing strategies that clearly work. Of course, the situation behind Cyberpunk 2077's initial release is hard to ignore. Still, the developer's steadfast loyalty to ensuring that players get the version of the game that they always intended is evident. In fact, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt receiving so many upgrades is a testament to that exactly considering that it's been about eight years since it launched and is still considered by many to be their game of the year, year after year.

CD Projekt Red currently has several very exciting projects in the works, with several of them also being a part of The Witcher franchise. Hopefully, more information about those titles will come to light before the end of the year.
