Assassin's Creed Nexus VR Announced For 2023

Ubisoft's VR Assassin's Creed is set to launch in 2023
by Tit Krajnik on June 01, 2023

During Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, Ubisoft announced an upcoming Assassin's Creed VR game named Assassin's Creed Nexus. The newest title is confirmed to release in 2023 and will be available on Meta Quest 3 and 2.

During the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase on Thursday, June 1, Ubisoft unveiled Assassin's Creed Nexus, the first VR game of the franchise. Unfortunately, Ubisoft hasn't shared any more details now, leaving the fans to wait for the Ubisoft Forward event, scheduled for June 12, to get more information on how the new game will use VR to deliver a new, more immersive experience.

Assassin's Creed Nexus was first announced in 2020 during Oculus Quest 2 event when Ubisoft also revealed a Splinter Cell VR game. At the time, the games were in early development, and according to Ubisoft VP of product development, Elizabeth Loverso, both were being built from the "ground up" to provide an ultimate VR experience.

Unfortunately, Splinter Cell VR was cancelled in July 2021, alongside Ghost Recon: Frontline and two unannounced games Ubisoft did not disclose.

Although not much is known about Assassin's Creed Nexus, we know that it is being developed by Red Storm, a studio behind VR games such as Werewolves Within, Star Trek: Bridge Crew, and Tom Clancy. Red Storm has partnered with Ubisoft Mumbai and Ubisoft Dusseldorf for the upcoming project.

"We are excited to announce that Assassin's Creed Nexus is coming to the Meta Quest 2 this year," said Creative Director David Votypka.

"Tune in to Ubisoft Forward on June 12, to learn all about becoming a master Assassin in virtual reality."

Even though Assassin's Creed Nexus was first unveiled in 2020, a VR instalment of the series was first mentioned back in 2017, when Matt Stenquist, a UX and UI designer, posted images of a VR title which was being developed by Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, with the former now know as Meta Quest. But it took Ubisoft three years, until 2020, to re-surface the idea of creating a VR Assassin's Creed during the Facebook Connect show, when the developers announced they were working on the game.

For now, all we know is that Assassin's Creed Nexus is in the latter stages of development and that it will release sometime this year. For more information, we'll have to tune in for the Ubisoft Forward event on June 12 at 9:45 AM PDT.
