Friday the 13th Game License Ends Shortly

The game has been plagued with a variety of licensing issues
by Natalie Collazo on June 08, 2023

If you weren't aware of the issues going on behind the scenes of the Friday the 13th video game, then it's time that you were brought up to speed. Since its release back in 2017, the IllFonic and Black Tower Studios-developed game has been plagued with a variety of licensing issues that eventually led to the servers being shut down in 2020. As a whole, the game was everything that fans of the series could have wanted including actors from the series coming back to reprise their original roles in voice. Even the actor Kane Hodder, most well known for being Jason in Jason X, provided motion capture for the game Jason.

Now, the licensing issues have officially reached a point of no return, forcing the team to have to remove it from storefronts altogether on December 31, 2023. To make matters worse, the licensing will only function for players who own the game digitally until December 31, 2024.

It's exciting to watch an entire game slowly disappear, as though it never existed. This is something to expect come the beginning of 2025, when essentially any and all versions of Friday the 13th will no longer be playable as it is exclusively online. This is similar to the new discussion circulating streaming and digital services in which it is entirely possible for shows to essentially no longer exist. Affected shows include The Drew Carrey Show and Tales From the Crypt which can only be watched if purchased through a home video format since there is no single network that has picked them up for streaming. In the case of video games, as more and more games are moving to exclusively online and digital formats, this is something that fans of games should begin to expect.
