Overwatch 2 Season 5: Team Queue Added, No SR Limits

Everyone can now queue with friends without SR restrictions
by Tit Krajnik on June 13, 2023

Blizzard announced the addition of a long-awaited Team Queue to Overwatch 2 in Season 5, which won’t have any SR restrictions. The update will allow players to team up with other players and play the game without the ranking restrictions, creating more opportunities for people to enjoy the game with their friends.

Overwatch 2 has always been a team game, but it rarely allowed players to enjoy group play with their friends. Even though grouping is possible, most people ran into problems with SR restrictions, which didn’t allow players with vastly different ranks to queue together. However, that’s about to change in Season 5.

In a blog post, Overwatch 2 developers shared some details about all the updates coming to the game with Season 5, which include everything from hero balance changes, changes to weekly challenges, and, most importantly, the introduction of Team Queue.

“We’ve heard your feedback that it’s hard for friends to play together competitively. In our main Competitive Play modes, we restrict the range in skill rating players can have when grouping up. Grand Master players are capped to only grouping up with just one other player. Playing together with friends is the best way to enjoy Overwatch and we are exploring new ways to get friends together for a fun competitive experience.”

Team Queue will only allow groups of five, regardless of their skill rating, to queue for a game, which will be an Overwatch 2 match with a standard lock ruleset. The games will also award ranking points, meaning that a group of five players can use Team Queue to play and climb the rank ladder together; however, it was not revealed how ranking would work.

For now, it seems like there will be no team SR ranking system, but instead, all players will keep their SR, which will either go down or up regardless of who they play with.

Nevertheless, the introduction of Team Queue was well-accepted by the community, who was asking for the feature to be added to the game for a while now. And without getting too optimistic, Team Queue might be the first step towards introducing a tournament mode akin to Clash in League of Legends.
