Story Missions in Overwatch 2 Will Set You Back $15

The story mission in Overwatch 2 is no longer a free-to-play
by Tit Krajnik on June 14, 2023

Blizzard recently announced its plans to release story missions for Overwatch 2, which is essentially a PvE mode for the game, which was worked on but eventually scrapped. However, while Overwatch 2 will get story missions, those won’t come for free like the base game.

Blizzard clarified some things about the story missions in Overwatch 2, which will launch with Season 6 on August 10. However, they won’t be free. Players who’ll want to play the PvE mode will be required to purchase the Invasion bundle, which will have a $15 price tag.

The long-awaited PvE mode for Overwatch 2, while now confirmed, has hardly been accepted well by the community who aren’t too excited about having to pay extra to play the stories in an otherwise free-to-play game. But this is just one of many issues Blizzard has had with handling Overwatch 2’s PvE content.

Blizzard initially promised that Overwatch 2 will have a PvE mode but then went silent and didn’t provide any news about its development. And once Blizzard decided to speak up about it, it brought even more disappointment when it was confirmed that the Hero Mode was cancelled.

Now, Blizzard promised Overwatch 2 story modes to calm the tensions, yet even that was not handled well by slapping a $15 price tag on the Invasion Bundle, which will include the long-awaited PvE mode.

In the initial announcement, it was revealed that those who purchase the bundle would get "permanent access" to the game’s first three-story missions, which suggested that the missions would be free for a limited time. And perhaps it was the poor wording that caused quite a backlash from the community, which came to the realization that the story missions would only be available to those who will purchase the bundle.

Besides getting access to the story missions, the Invasion bundle will also include 1,000 Overwatch Coins, access to Sojourn in non-PvE modes, and Sojurn legendary skin. That looks like a fine offer, but putting a price on the story modes doesn’t suggest anything good for the future of the game.

Blizzard has promised that it would tell an ongoing story with the Overwatch 2 story missions, meaning there will likely be more PvE content, but if the Invasion Bundle is any indication, then all succeeding story missions will also going to come with a price. And that wouldn’t be an issue if Overwatch 2 wasn’t a free-to-play game.
