Valve Removes Battle Pass from Dota 2

Instead of battle pass, Valve will focus on in-game content
by Tit Krajnik on June 20, 2023

Valve announced that it’s removing Battle Pass from Dota 2 in favor of committing to in-game content, which will be available for all players. The removal of the Battle Pass, which played a significant role in crowdfunding The International prize pool, raises many questions, but Valve has all the right answers.

In a massive announcement, Valve revealed that there will no longer be Battle Passes for Dota 2 and that it will no longer be releasing the bundles from 2023 onwards. The massive change was revealed in a blog post named “Learning from the Past,” where Valve explained that its plans for Dota 2 and the game’s future have changed, and one of the main things that had to be addressed was the Battle Pass.

The blog post explained that while the Compendiums and the events that come with it have been a very exciting time in Dota 2, on the flip side, it left the rest of the year feeling barren in comparison. So to address the issue, Valve started experimenting this year and put more resources into creating new content throughout the year rather than saving it for the Battle Pass. The experiment proved to be a success.

The 7.33 Frontiers update, which went live in April, was extremely well accepted by the players as it introduced a plethora of new content to the game. However, all that wouldn’t be possible had Valve kept focusing more on the Battle Pass, so instead of saving its resources for the end of the year, Valve will, from now on, release regular updates.

In addition, the blog post talked about a special event designed to commemorate Dota 2’s 10th anniversary. Dota 2 first entered beta in 2010 but was officially released on July 9, 2013, meaning we’re just a few weeks away from its 10th birthday. However, the planned big update for the game will miss that date, meaning that the official Dota 2 birthday update won’t go live until later this Summer.

The main question surrounding the cancellation of Dota 2 Battle Pass is how Valve will approach crowdfunding The International. Since its inception, The International’s prize pool was primarily crowdfunded through the players’ purchase of Battle Pass; however, even without it, Valve has a plan.

As revealed, the cancellation of the Battle Pass won’t eliminate the crowdfunding element for The International’s prize pool. Instead, Valve plans to release a The Internationa-themed update in autumn, focusing on the tournament, the games, teams, and players, offering various cosmetic items to the in-game shop.

Through the event and the purchase of in-game items and fantasy games, Dota 2 players will still be able to contribute to TI’s prize pool, so ultimately, the removal of the Battle Pass won’t have any adverse effects on the game and its esports scene.

Interestingly, Valve decided to remove Dota 2 battle pass in an era where nearly every game has some sort of a Battle Pass implemented as an excellent tool to monetize their products. However, Valve believes this system is bad for Dota 2’s timelines and, ultimately, bad for the game.
