Nintendo Meeting Highlights Gender Customization Issues

Female characters are said to have more diverse and appealing options
by Joe Wilcock on June 23, 2023

In a recent Nintendo shareholder meeting, an individual identified as Haruikatako believed to be a dedicated Splatoon 3 player, took a bold step to voice their dissatisfaction with what they perceive as preferential treatment for girl inklings over boy characters in the highly anticipated Switch exclusive. Haruikatako, who claims to have spent a significant amount of money purchasing shares in Nintendo to attend the meeting, raised concerns about the disparity in customization options between the two genders within the game.

According to reports by VGC and Twitter user NStyles, Haruikatako expressed disappointment over what they view as an imbalance in the availability of customization features such as hairstyles and emotes, suggesting that female characters receive more diverse and appealing options. The individual further revealed that they had previously written letters to Nintendo expressing their concerns but had never received a response, which reportedly motivated them to take their grievances to the shareholder meeting.

This incident echoes a similar occurrence from last year when another passionate Nintendo fan purchased over $40,000 in company stock to inquire about the revival of the beloved racing franchise, F-Zero. In both cases, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa took the time to acknowledge and respond to the concerns raised by these dedicated fans.

During the meeting, Twitter user NStyles noted that President Furukawa interrupted Haruikatako's extended question due to its length, but this did not deter the passionate player from continuing their rant. After the tirade eventually concluded, President Furukawa graciously expressed his gratitude, saying, "Thank you for your interest in playing our game. We appreciate your valuable opinion."

Splatoon 3, the highly popular ink-based multiplayer game, recently made a triumphant return to Inkopolis as part of its expansion pass, which was announced earlier this year. The upcoming second wave of DLC, aptly named "Side Order," is expected to launch later in the year, bringing new content and experiences to fans of the franchise.

It is important to note that Nintendo has yet to release an official statement regarding the concerns raised by Haruikatako at the shareholder meeting. While the player's criticism regarding the perceived disparity between customization options for girl inklings and boy characters in Splatoon 3 is one perspective, it remains to be seen how the company will address this matter moving forward.

In the dynamic world of gaming, passionate players like Haruikatako serve as a reminder of the impact games has on individuals and their dedication to shaping the gaming landscape. Their efforts to voice concerns constructively are a testament to the importance of open dialogue between players and developers, ultimately working together to create an inclusive and enjoyable gaming experience for all.
