Starfield Won't Come With a Physical Disc

It will accompany a "code in box" instead
by Tit Krajnik on June 25, 2023

As stated by Bethesda, Starfield won't have a physical disc release, as the game joins the long list of games that left discs behind. Instead, the physical copies of Starfield will come with a code in a box, making it effectively the same thing as buying the game online.

Even though not offering a physical disc isn't a huge issue, the problem arises when most online storefronts don't have the warning to warn the buyers of this, so anyone who preordered a physical Starfield game might be disappointed to learn that the box won't include an actual disc. Naturally, the fans are upset about the news, but mainly because they weren't warned about it before and had to learn about the physical copy of the game not including a disc via a response from the Bethesda support Twitter account.

Interestingly, shortly after the Bethesda support Twitter account unveiled the news, the Tweet was deleted, which might suggest that the response was a mistake. On the other side, Bethesda support made it clear that the game won't include a disc.

"All physical editions include a code for the chosen platform. There are no physical discs," read the now-deleted Tweet.

Although disappointing news for those who were hoping to get their hands on Starfield disc, Starfield is by no means the only nor the first game not to offer a physical disc. Another notable game that decided to do the same includes Alan Wake 2, as the industry slowly moves away from physical launches.

The latest news sparked a backlash from the fans, but this is not the first time that Bethesda found itself under fire for the same reason. Earlier this year, Bethesda also revealed that Redfall won't include a physical disc – and it didn't, but only on PC.

It'll be interesting to see whether Bethesda will go back on its word and release physical discs, but considering the whole industry is moving to digital sales, it wouldn't be too shocking if Starfield indeed launches disc-less.

Starfield is set to release on September 6, 2023, on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
