Dying Light 2's 'Good Night Good Luck' Update Revamps Gameplay and Visuals

Including some features seen in the trailer but omitted from the game
by Joe Wilcock on June 29, 2023

In a much sought after update, Techland's Dying Light 2 has introduced a significant patch known as "Good Night Good Luck." This update, which arrives more than a year after the game's release, includes notable gameplay and visual enhancements that aim to enhance the overall player experience. While some promised features from pre-release trailers are still missing, the update introduces long-awaited additions and improvements to the parkour mechanics, nighttime gameplay, and visual customization options.

One of the prominent changes brought by the "Good Night Good Luck" update is a comprehensive rework of the game's parkour system. Players can now enjoy more fluid and responsive movements, with animations that feel less "floaty" compared to the original release. A new "physical" parkour option has been included specifically for seasoned veterans of the first Dying Light installment. This option disables certain assists that previously facilitated character navigation, giving players greater control and adding a level of challenge for those seeking a more authentic experience.

Nighttime in Dying Light 2 has received a significant overhaul, offering a darker and more perilous environment for players. Previously secure rooftops are now populated by advanced volatile zombies, intensifying the level of danger that players will face after sunset. Additionally, the update introduces new flashlight rendering and adjusts the overall visual tone, creating a heavy, almost horror-like ambiance during nighttime gameplay. These changes aim to heighten the sense of suspense and increase the immersion factor for players venturing out into the dark.

The "Good Night Good Luck" update also caters to the preferences of fans who yearned for the grittier aesthetics of the original Dying Light. Techland has introduced a new color grading option called "Harran Sunset," which aligns the visuals of Dying Light 2 more closely with its predecessor. This customization feature allows players to modify the color palette of the game, delivering a visual style reminiscent of the first installment.

Despite the numerous enhancements introduced by the "Good Night Good Luck" update, it is important to note that some features promised in pre-release trailers, such as a robust faction system and the organic consequences of narrative actions, have yet to be added to the game. Players who were eagerly anticipating these elements may find themselves disappointed by their absence in this update. However, Techland has assured the community that they are actively working on delivering these features in future updates.

Techland's "Good Night Good Luck" update for Dying Light 2 brings substantial improvements to the game's parkour mechanics, nighttime gameplay, and visual customization options. With enhanced animations, darker nights filled with advanced volatile zombies, and a new color grading option, the update aims to provide a fresh and immersive experience for players.
