Daedalic Entertainment Shifts Focus to Publishing, Ends Internal Development Efforts

After the failure of Lord of the Rings: Gollum
by Joe Wilcock on July 01, 2023

According to German outlet Games Wirtschaft, Daedalic Entertainment acknowledged the challenges associated with this decision, referring to it as a "difficult turning point" that may potentially mark "a new beginning." The company's development portfolio extends beyond its upcoming title, Lord of the Rings: Gollum, with notable projects including the Deponia series, which captivated players in 2012, and the critically acclaimed adaptation of The Pillars of the Earth as a point-and-click adventure game in 2018.

However, the recent launch of Lord of the Rings: Gollum encountered significant issues, resulting in an unfavorable reception. While the decision to transition from a renowned "charming 2D adventure game" development studio to producing a triple-A stealth platformer may appear misguided, it is essential to acknowledge the aspirations and creative ambitions that drive a company's direction.

Daedalic Entertainment's decision to prioritize its publishing business reflects its confidence in the potential of indie titles. Notably, the company has contributed to the success of beloved indie favorites such as Inkulinati and Unrailed. By focusing on publishing, Daedalic aims to cultivate innovative experiences and support emerging talent within the gaming industry.

As part of the transition, Daedalic plans to continue providing support for Lord of the Rings: Gollum with at least one additional patch. However, it remains uncertain how much these post-release updates can rectify the game's core issues.

The impact of this transition on Daedalic Entertainment's development staff cannot be understated. Approximately 25 employees out of a total of 90 have been affected by the layoffs. The company acknowledges the unfortunate outcome for these talented individuals, whose efforts contributed to the development of Lord of the Rings: Gollum. While the decision may appear disappointing, it is vital to recognize that organizational adjustments are often necessary for growth and sustainability.

Daedalic Entertainment's shift towards publishing aligns with an industry-wide recognition of the diverse and valuable contributions that indie developers bring to the gaming landscape. By nurturing the talents of indie studios and fostering creativity, the company aims to forge new partnerships and deliver captivating gaming experiences to a broad audience.
