Diablo 4 Are Accidentally Buying Premium Battle Passes

Blizzard put the buy button in a convenient place, tricking players into buying the Premium Battle Pass
by Tit Krajnik on July 24, 2023

Diablo 4 has enjoyed a solid launch, and while its first season was a bit rocky at the very start, needing a couple of patches to nerf overpowered builds and characters, the game looks to be in a good spot. However, there are other minor issues that the player base isn't accepting well.

Although not a bug nor a major in-game issue, Blizzard's placement of the buy button for the Premium Battle Pass has drawn a lot of fan criticism, as its placement tricked many into accidentally buying the product. A streamer, Rurikhan, shared the incident that happened to him, expressing his frustration at the menu design, which tricked him into buying the Premium Battle Pass.

"So Blizzard placed the 'Activate Premium Battle Pass' button right next to the button you have to constantly press to check your Season Journey," said Rurikhan.

Whether the placement of the button was indeed deliberately and maliciously designed in a way to trick players into buying Blizzard's product is up to debate, but some of the players agree that Blizzard knew what they were doing with it.

The biggest problem here is that there is no confirmation button players have to click before buying the Premium Battle Pass, which is purchased instantly after clicking the buy button. So as much as we can defend Blizzard for not doing intentionally, it definitely looks like a dark pattern design.

Since Diablo 4 battle passes are linked to a season, those who purchase the Premium Battle Pass now will have to buy it again in the next season if they want to have access to it. This makes the accidental purchase more annoying for those who want to wait until Season 2 or later seasons.

Blizzard has since acknowledged the incidents and stated that they're working on a fix.

"We have a temp fix in the works that will at least ensure the cursor isn't defaulted there and will instead be defaulted on Season Journey," said Diablo 4's global community development director, Adam Fletcher.

Accidentally buying the Premium Battle Pass isn't the end of the world, but it does look like it's a potentially exploitative design, which is just another thing Diablo 4 players can hold against Blizzard, who was already caught under fire from the player base who complained about how the game has become less fun since the recent update.

Luckily, like Blizzard promised to fix the button design, the developer also promised big changes, including fewer nerfs, a better endgame, and faster leveling.
