Blizzard Warns Diablo 4 Players Using Game-Modifying Software

You can get permanently banned for using any game-modifying software in Diablo 4
by Tit Krajnik on July 27, 2023

On Wednesday, July 26, Diablo 4 global community development director Adam Fletcher made a blue post on Blizzard’s forums, warning players about using any game-modifying software. According to Fletcher, any unauthorized modifications or changes to the Diablo 4 file directory can lead to a permaban.

In a blue post, Adam Fletcher explained that Diablo 4 explicitly prohibits the use of bots, cheats, hacks, and unauthorized software, which can in any way interfere with the game. This also includes mods or addons, the use of which can lead to a permanent ban of a Diablo 4 account.

“All Diablo IV players agree to the Blizzard EULA as a condition of playing the game. The Blizzard EULA explicitly prohibits cheating, bots, hacks, and any other unauthorized software which automates, modifies, or otherwise interferes with the game. This is important to players’ security as well as the game’s long-term integrity.”

In the post, Fletcher called out a specific mod, TurboHUD4 (also known as Thud4), which is now confirmed to be a prohibited mod that will lead to a perma ban. Thud4 is actually a UI mod rather than malicious software used for cheating or exploiting the game. Instead, it offers a different overlay and tracks various resources or items you’ve missed.

However, while Thud4 might not seem like a tool that would gain players any significant advantage, Blizzard isn’t too keen on its usability, mainly Thud4’s ability to unveil dungeon maps before they’re explored.

Thud4 was the only explicitly called-out mod that is now prohibited in Diablo 4, but it is just one of many mods players will have to learn to live without. Where exactly Blizzard draws the line between what’s allowed and what’s not is up to each individual’s imagination, but if it feels like a mod is too helpful, then it probably is.

The sudden announcement of a potential perma ban of everyone using mods comes as a bit of a shock, mainly because it comes from Blizzard, whose other creation, World of Warcraft, has thousands of UI mods available. In fact, World of Warcraft is unplayable at the highest level without UI mods, and even causal players would struggle without them. And yet, for World of Warcraft, that’s perfectly normal and allowed.

Moreover, banning Thud4 makes little sense, considering players in Diablo 3 used a very similar mod without issues. On the other side, some mods do, in fact, give players an advantage over those who don’t use them, so perhaps it’s for the better.

Still, we would like to see a clear line against mods – what exactly is allowed and what isn’t? And what does “any game-modifying software” mean?
