Assassin's Creed Mirage Will Take “20-30 Hours” to Complete

Ubisoft streamline their epic stealth franchise
by Joe Wilcock on July 31, 2023

In a recent interview with French YouTuber Julien Chièze, Ubisoft's lead producer Fabian Salomon shed light on the much-anticipated Assassin's Creed Mirage, offering insights into the game's size, gameplay mechanics, and setting. As the franchise continues to evolve, Assassin's Creed Mirage harks back to its roots, delivering an immersive experience focused on a single city and embracing a more nostalgic playstyle.

Ubisoft's Mirage, set to release on October 12 via Ubisoft Connect and the Epic Games Store, will transport players to the thriving metropolis of Baghdad during the ninth century. Salomon emphasized that the development team's primary goal was to recreate the ambiance and intricacies of this historical city with meticulous attention to detail.

One notable departure from recent Assassin's Creed games is the map size. While the sprawling multi-nation maps have defined more recent titles, Mirage promises to offer a more intimate and condensed environment. Salomon's revelation compared the game's map size to the likes of Constantinople in Revelations or Paris in Unity, allowing players to focus on the nuances of a single location rather than traversing vast distances.

Mirage's estimated completion time further highlights its compact design, with Salomon suggesting players can expect to roll credits after 20 to 30 hours of gameplay. During internal playtesting, the latest playtimes averaged around 20 to 23 hours, with completionists potentially clocking in up to 25 to 30 hours. Players who wish to rush through the main story can expect to finish in around 20 hours.

This approach brings the title in line with the earlier Assassin's Creed games, which were known for their concise narratives that rarely exceeded 40 hours. In contrast, more recent entries like Odyssey and Valhalla could demand over 100 hours for players aiming to achieve completionist status.

Assassin's Creed Mirage focuses on a protagonist named Basim, emphasizing stealth and parkour expertise rather than an overtly warrior-like approach. The game seeks to reimagine the signature social stealth mechanics that were pivotal in the series' early success. Reintroducing features such as bench assassinations adds an air of nostalgia while catering to long-time fans who yearned for the return of these iconic elements.

Furthermore, the game introduces a range of historically inspired weapons, including blow darts, adding strategic depth to players' arsenal. However, some fans have expressed reservations about the inclusion of teleportation mechanics, which appear to diverge from the franchise's grounded origins.

As the release date draws near, Ubisoft's Mirage will be available initially on Ubisoft Connect and the Epic Games Store, with the Steam version yet to receive a confirmed release date. With its deliberate return to historical roots, compact city-based design, and revamped stealth mechanics, Assassin's Creed Mirage promises to captivate both long-time fans and newcomers to the franchise alike.

Ubisoft's decision to revisit the iconic setting of Baghdad is an interesting one. Players can look forward to exploring the vibrant streets, unveiling a rich tapestry of intrigue, and experiencing a renewed appreciation for the series' origins. As Assassin's Creed Mirage emerges on the gaming scene, it presents a unique opportunity to rediscover the allure of the ancient city and embrace the spirit of stealth and adventure that has defined the franchise for over a decade.
