Jedi Survivor Heading to Last-Gen Consoles

EA has seemingly backtracked on their initial vision
by Joe Wilcock on August 03, 2023

Respawn Entertainment has caught fans off guard by announcing the arrival of the Star Wars sequel, Jedi: Survivor, on the aging PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. This sequel, launched in April as a follow-up to the well-received 2019 title Jedi: Fallen Order, tells the story of Cal Kestis, a resilient Jedi who survived the Clone Wars purge and now leads a courageous band of misfits fighting against the oppressive Empire.

Initially, Respawn chose to skip releasing Jedi: Survivor on last-gen consoles to focus on delivering what they called a "true new-gen experience" to players on the latest gaming platforms. However, the allure of the millions of dedicated players still using older hardware in 2023 prompted a change of heart. During Electronic Arts' recent earnings briefing on August 1, they revealed that Respawn is in the early stages of developing ports for both the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game.

Electronic Arts clarified that despite the new development, they remain committed to enhancing the current versions of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Addressing performance issues, including framerate drops and in-game stuttering, continues to be a top priority for Respawn, with updates promised in the near future.

The decision to bring Jedi: Survivor to last-gen consoles contradicts earlier statements made by the game's director, Stig Asmussen, who had previously justified skipping these platforms to offer a superior experience on new-gen systems. Now, Respawn is willing to make adjustments to resolution and framerate limits to accommodate the aging hardware of the PS4 and Xbox One.

It's worth noting that Jedi: Survivor is renowned for pushing the capabilities of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S to their limits, making its performance on the base Xbox One, which is nearly a decade old, a matter of curiosity among gamers

As the development of the last-gen ports progresses, players eagerly await updates on the release timeline. The decision to expand to the PS4 and Xbox One, with their large and dedicated player bases, is a strategic one for Electronic Arts and Respawn. However, it remains essential for both developers to strike a balance between catering to older consoles and delivering an optimal gaming experience that stays true to the game's ambitious vision.
