BioWare Cancels Anthem Next, Servers To Stay Online

The publisher has stopped development on Anthem Next, though the original game's servers will stay online.
by Luke Luby on March 01, 2021

Anthem is one of the few major releases in recent years that didn't live up to the hype. Many players were expecting a game that made them feel like Iron Man, though they were sorely disappointed. Naturally, this led to publisher BioWare announcing that it would be rebuilding the game from the ground up. However, the game, titled Anthem Next, is never going to materialize, according to a recent announcement.

The news comes straight from BioWare, who had been in extensive internal talks to debate the future of the title. In announcing the news, the company said that there were several factors at play, with the ongoing pandemic making development quite difficult. As the firm noted:

"2020 was a year unlike any other however and while we continue to make progress against all our game projects at BioWare, working from home during the pandemic has had an impact on our productivity and not everything we had planned as a studio before COVID-19 can be accomplished without putting undue stress on our teams."

BioWare went on to note that the decision wasn't an easy one. However, it said that it needed to put all of its focus onto specific games. Naturally, this should be good news for fans of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises. The annoucement, which came courtesy of Anthem executive producer Christian Dailey, also noted that the company wanted to continue providing quality updates for Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Despite the company saying that the pandemic had a significant impact on its decision to cancel Anthem Next, it wasn't the only one. In contrast, there were reports that EA, the game's publisher, was debating whether or not to fund the development. With this uncertainty, it was unlikely that development would get too far. However, it was noted that Anthem's servers would remain online for the game's dwindling player base.
