New Farcry Lead Promises “Big Things” for the Future of the Franchise

Drew Holmes announced his promotion recently
by Joe Wilcock on August 14, 2023

In a recent development within Ubisoft, Drew Holmes has taken the reins as the new IP Director for the Far Cry series. A long-standing company veteran, Holmes previously held the role of narrative lead for Far Cry 5 and its spin-off, New Dawn. While these titles achieved moderate success, the release of Far Cry 6 fell short of expectations, leaving many questioning the future of the franchise.

Holmes, who has an industry background that includes contributions to BioShock Infinite and the Saint’s Row series, is now overseeing the development of Far Cry 7.

“It’s been an exciting few months… I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as IP Director of Far Cry at Ubisoft! We have big things in store ???? Don’t hesitate to reach out if you want to be a part of the next evolution of this great brand!”

- Drew Holmes

The rumor mill has been churning regarding the potential release date for Far Cry 7, with speculation pointing towards a Fall 2025 launch. Notably, the game is said to be built on the Snowdrop engine, known for its use in Tom Clancy's The Division series. Additionally, whispers of a standalone multiplayer game set in the Far Cry universe have surfaced, described as an extraction shooter. However, Ubisoft has refrained from confirming any of these speculations, leaving players in suspense.

The reception of Far Cry 6, the latest entry in the series, has cast a shadow over the franchise's future. While Drew Holmes maintains optimism about the trajectory of Far Cry, the lukewarm response to Far Cry 6 raises questions about the viability of the series moving forward. Far Cry 6 was met with mixed reviews, with praise directed at its open-world design and world-building, but criticism centered on its narrative execution and technical issues.
