Mario Voice Actor Charles Martinet Is Stepping Down From Recording

Charles Martinet, the iconic voice behind Mario, transitions to a role as a “Mario Ambassador”
by Tit Krajnik on August 21, 2023

Voice actor, Charles Martinet, known for the voice of Mario, Luigi, and Vario, has announced he is retiring after spending the last three decades working on Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. games. He will be stepping into the new role of Mario Ambassador.

Nintendo announced the news of Charles Martinet’s retirement on Twitter, revealing Mertinet will no longer serve as a voice actor for Mario. Moreover, it was revealed that Martinet is not involved in the development of Super Mario Bros. Wonder – the upcoming game in the Super Mario franchise – however, his voice will appear in the re-release of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon.

Martinet has been behind the iconic voice of Mario since 1991. He started to perform for Nintendo at trade shows and would go on to record Mario’s voice for the first time in Super Mario 64, released in 1996. Since then, Martinet has been appointed to additional roles, including as a voice actor for Luigi, Waluigi, Wario, Baby Luigi, and Baby Mario.

“Charles Martinent has been the original voice of Mario in Nintendo games for a long time, as far back as Super Mario 64. Charles is now moving into the brand-new role of Mario Ambassador. With this transition, he will be stepping back from recording character voices for our games, but he’ll continue to travel the world sharing the joy of Mario and interacting with you all!”

“It has been an honor working with Charles to help bring Mario to life for so many years, and we want to thank and celebrate him. Please keep an eye out for a special video message from Shigeru Miyamoto and Charles himself, which we will post at a future date.”

Besides serving as a voice actor for Super Mario, Martinet regularly travelled with Nintendo to support and promote various Super Mario releases, including this year’s Super Mario Bros. movie.

Even though Martinet decided to retire from his role as a voice actor for Super Mario, he will remain with Nintendo and take over the role of a “Mario Ambassador”, in which he’ll continue to travel with Nintendo and help promote the upcoming game and movie releases of the Super Mario franchise.
