Microsoft Cans The Kinect

For real this time.
by Natalie Collazo on August 22, 2023

It seems like the Kinect has long been a staple for both the Xbox family of consoles after the original Xbox as well as for those who want to develop games for VR. After over a decade of making the Kinect in all its glory and different iterations, the company has decided to say goodbye to its development.

The hardware first appeared in 2010 and was followed by several rumors about the company spying on users through the camera itself. Another rendition of the same hardware was created for the Xbox One launch where every console came with one. This wasn't very long-lived as shortly afterward, consoles began to ship without the camera. Then, in 2019, the Azure Kinect Developer Kit was created to help developers create games on the hardware as well as use it for other projects. This hardware did not launch at all with the Xbox Series set of consoles, which began to mark its decline in usage.

In a blog post discussing the future of the camera technology, it looks like even though the Kinect might not be a product any longer, the Femto Bolt, a product similar in design and usage to the Azure Kinect Developer Kit, will be taking its place. It's currently unclear just how many developers and users are taking advantage of the technology, but it must be a significant amount for the company to feel the need to replace the hardware with another.
