Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Will Be The Game's Final Expansion

Not because CD Projekt Red is unhappy with the sales
by Tit Krajnik on August 31, 2023

CD Projekt Red has revealed its half-year financials and some insight into what each of the company's teams are working on now and plan to work on in the future. And from the information available, we know there won't be any more Cyberpunk 2077 expansions following Phantom Liberty.

In the half-year financial report provided by CD Projekt Red, we can gather some interesting information. As shown, the developer has had a decrease in revenue up to June 2023, which makes sense, considering CD Projekt Red has not released any new games in the first half of 2023; however, the numbers are bound to go up following the Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty on September 26.

While CD Projekt Red has not made any profit in the first six months, it has spent over $40 million working on Phantom Liberty and other titles, including Polaris – the next Witcher game, and another Witcher project named Sirius. Interestingly, while the size of the team working on Polaris has increased, the number of members working on Sirius has decreased, the same as the team size working on Gwent, which will stop receiving support by the end of 2024.

Although this gives us some insight into CD Projekt Red's plans for the future, the most interesting was the detail unveiled that the developer has no intentions of working on another expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 after Phantom Liberty.

Even though the company is happy with the revenue made on the pre-orders of Phantom Liberty, CD Projekt Red has decided that Phantom Liberty will be the last time it'll work on the RED engine. The engine, which has been used for all of CD Projekt Red's games so far, will be replaced by Unreal Engine 5.

The news comes a month after significant layoffs at CD Projekt Red, which waved goodbye to 9% of its staff or around 100 people. Those layoffs were supposedly a part of an "ongoing process of several deep transformations within the studio," which will lead to more quality games that will be delivered on time.

"To meet our own high expectations and ambitions to create the best role-playing games, we not only want to have the best people but also the right teams," said CEO Adam Kicinski.

"What we mean by that is having teams built around our projects' needs; teams that are more agile and effective. At this point in time, we're certain that for CD Projekt Red to grow, we need to be consistent in implementing that approach."

Even though knowing that Phantom Liberty will be the last Cyberpunk 2077 DLC isn't the most exciting news, Michal Nowakowski, CD Projekt Red's SVP of business development, addressed the decision, stating that it's a technological decision and that it's ultimately something that'll lead to CD Projekt Red releasing better games in the future.

"It's a technological decision to be honest. This is the last time we're working on the Red Engine for the time being at least, and in the foreseeable future, as you know, we are working on the Unreal Engine from Epic. This was one of the key reasons why we decided this was the only one."

As a result, the next Witcher game and all upcoming games will be created on Unreal Engine 5.
