Annapurna Animation Adapts Stray into Feature Film

The kitty is hitting the big screens
by Joe Wilcock on September 06, 2023

Annapurna Animation has announced its plans to adapt the video game Stray into a feature film. The game, which captured attention due to its unique premise of a cat navigating a futuristic city, will attempt to translate its charm and appeal onto the big screen.

Stray gained initial popularity when it was unveiled during the 2020 PS5 reveal event. The game, known for its visually appealing aesthetics and exploration of dense urban environments, was hailed by some as a "deeply profound meditation on what it means to be alive." While such praise might raise eyebrows for those not already invested in gaming culture, it seems the concept of a cat's adventures in a robot city was enough to generate significant buzz.

Annapurna Animation's decision to adapt Stray into a movie is in line with the industry's increasing interest in transforming video game narratives into cinematic experiences. However, it's worth noting that such adaptations often face challenges in capturing the essence of the source material.

The president of Annapurna Animation, Robert Baird, acknowledged the uniqueness of Stray, describing it as a "buddy comedy about a cat and a robot" and highlighting the humor inherent in their dynamic. He also pointed out the absence of human characters in the story, which was undoubtedly a key factor in the game's appeal. Recreating this distinct point of view on screen, he admitted, feels "impossible" at times, but it remains crucial in maintaining the essence of the game's popularity.

While Annapurna Animation plans to adapt more indie hits from Annapurna Interactive into movies, specific titles under consideration remain undisclosed. Andrew Millstein, another leader at Annapurna Animation, clarified that Stray was selected first because of its "wild popularity" among audiences. The studio appears to approach each adaptation as a puzzle, striving to understand what makes a game popular and how to translate that appeal into a compelling cinematic experience that respects both the game and its audience.

Unfortunately, the announcement does not provide a release window for the
Stray feature film, nor does it specify whether it will premiere on streaming platforms or in theaters. The uncertainty surrounding its release raises questions about the studio's plans for the film.

As fans eagerly await the film adaptation of Stray, they can still engage with the source material by playing the game. Stray is currently available on multiple gaming platforms, including PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC. However, whether the game can successfully bridge the gap between interactive entertainment and the traditional cinematic experience remains to be seen.
