Starfield Speedrun Breaks Three-Hour Mark During Early Access

The speedrunning community never fails to impress
by Joe Wilcock on September 06, 2023

In a surprising turn of events, a routed speedrun of Bethesda's highly-anticipated title, Starfield, has emerged during its early access period, clocking in at just under three hours. This achievement, while impressive, raises questions about the state of the game and the impact of speedrunning on its development.

The news of this speedrun comes via VG247, as a test run by player Micrologist surfaced on YouTube on September 3rd. The run showcases a mix of unconventional strategies, including patiently waiting outside a pirate ship with an explosive canister as its door opens slowly, followed by a swift entry and explosion. The route also incorporates a fair share of hopping and jetpack tricks, along with short-range teleporting punches that, while visually impressive, may not significantly affect the overall completion time.

One eyebrow-raising discovery by Twitter user Bl00dthunder involves a peculiar glitch where shoving an NPC into a file cabinet seemingly warps them to a later point in the game's story. It's an unexpected twist that highlights the unpredictability of early speedrunning in a title like Starfield.

However, it's crucial to note that these speedrunning strategies are far from polished. They are in a nascent stage and may not withstand future patches and updates from Bethesda. As the game evolves, speedrunning enthusiasts will need to adapt to any changes, potentially slowing down their progress.

Comparatively, Starfield's early access speedrun completion time of under three hours stands out, especially when considering that the main quest is purportedly designed to take around 30-40 hours, according to an IGN interview from the previous year. This stark contrast between casual gameplay and speedrunning showcases the remarkable skill and determination of these players.

Yet, it's essential to remember that other Bethesda titles like Fallout 4, Skyrim, and Oblivion boast astonishingly quick speedruns with world records ranging from 22 minutes to less than three minutes. These feats underscore the fact that the faster a game becomes, the more challenging it is to shave off precious seconds from the world record.

As Starfield's speedrunning community matures, it's likely that competition will intensify, with runners striving to reach new records. However, the game's inherent complexity and the potential for future updates mean that maintaining such rapid completion times will be a formidable task.
