Embracer Group Contemplates Sale of Gearbox Entertainment

Borderlands could be up for grabs!
by Joe Wilcock on September 12, 2023

In recent developments, Embracer Group, Europe's largest gaming company, has been mulling over the possibility of selling off Gearbox Entertainment, the U.S.-based game developer widely recognized for its first-person shooter franchise, Borderlands. Sources have revealed that Embracer Group is exploring various options for Gearbox Entertainment, including a potential sale, as part of its ongoing efforts to bolster its financial stability.

This contemplation comes in the wake of Embracer Group's strategic restructuring, aimed at reducing its net debt from SEK 16.7 billion to less than SEK 10 billion by the end of the financial year. This move has already seen the closure of Volition, another studio under the Embracer umbrella, which was announced in late August. Embracer Group cited its restructuring program as the driving force behind the decision to shutter Volition, a decision that left employees and fans disappointed.

Embracer Group's restructuring efforts follow an extensive acquisition spree undertaken between 2019 and 2022, during which the company acquired numerous studios. As of September 2023, Embracer Group boasts a staggering 129 internal game development studios, employing over 15,000 individuals and contracted workers across more than 40 countries.

It remains to be seen how this decision will impact both Gearbox Entertainment and the gaming community, as Embracer Group continues to navigate its path toward financial resilience in an ever-evolving industry.
