Mortal Kombat 1 Won’t Launch With Cross-Play

Playing with your friends on different platforms won’t be possible at launch
by Tit Krajnik on September 13, 2023

Cross-play support is an expected feature of all bigger fighting games, and all the more prominent games come with it. Some, such as Tekken 7 and Street Fighter 6, even had it at launch. However, while Mortal Kombat 1 will have cross-play support at one point, it won't be available at launch.

Mortal Kombat 1 wasn't expected to have cross-play support at launch since there were no mentions of the feature on the game's FAQ page. But even though the players didn't expect the game to support it, the official news from NetherRealms confirming that cross-play won't be available in MK1 until later didn't sit right with the fans.

NetherRealms explained the situation in a recent tweep, stating that the team behind Mortal Kombat 1 is working on the feature, which will come at one point, but it won't be ready on the official launch day, on September 19.

NetherRealms has not given the official date to introduce the cross-play support, so it might happen in a week, month, or year. However, considering how vital cross-play is for fighting games, an earlier release is more likely - potentially no later than in a month. But at this point, we can only speculate as there is no information on how far into the development of the cross-play feature the team behind Mortal Kombat 1 is.

Until then, MK1 players will have to settle for playing against people using the same platform, which might not be that big of an issue as there certainly won't be a lack of players in the first months of MK1 release. Those who play with friends who own different platforms will have to wait for the cross-play support to be released.

Mortal Kombat 1 has an official release date set for Tuesday, September 19; however, those who've purchased the Premium or Kollektor's Edition will be able to play the game on Thursday, September 14.
