Remember Fortnite's FTC Settlement? You Might Be Entitled To A Refund

How much do you think you're entitled to?
by Natalie Collazo on September 20, 2023

Do you remember when everything happened at the end of last year with the FTC and Epic Games? Well, it was found out that the company had been collecting data on those under thirteen years of age who were playing Fortnite as well as making it incredibly easy to accidentally make purchases only to be told that those purchases cannot be refunded. If you happened to be a part of that debacle as a victim, then you could be entitled to a refund according to the FTC themselves.

Now, there are some requirements that need to be met before you can be eligible for a refund. The FTC outlines those requirements as follows:

  • You were charged in-game currency for items you didn’t want between January 2017 and September 2022
  • Your child made charges to your credit card without your knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018
  • Your account was locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after you complained to your credit card company about wrongful charges

You'll need to have a claim number or your Epic Account ID and apply on the Fortnite Refund website in order to file your claim with the company. There is no official date as to when these refunds will be made out or how, but there is a deadline of January 17 to get your claim in.

Being a part of this refund would make you a part of history as the settlement of about $245 million in payouts marks this the FTC's “largest refund amount in a gaming case, and its largest administrative order in history.” Fortnite is set at being the most successful live service game of all time, so it's possible that a financial blow of this caliber won't really affect too much. Especially considering all of the latest collaborations, events, and announcements that have been made for the game as of late.
