Capcom's President Says That Games Are Too Cheap

How much are you willing to pay for a video game?
by Natalie Collazo on September 26, 2023

It looks like games are far more expensive to create than we had all thought. Well, everyone knows that it can take several years for a game to be released after its announcement, and even then, there's a backlog of several years of planning and developing that led up to the announcement. According to Capcom's president, Haruhi Tsujimoto, the current price point of $70 USD for a triple-A game, one that was only adopted about a year ago, is now too cheap to sustain a developer's lifespan.

According to a report, Tsujimoto spoke at the Tokyo Game Show on September 23 and felt that the price was too low:

“Development costs are about 100 times higher than during the Famicom era, but software prices have not gone up that much. There is also a need to raise wages. Considering the fact that wages are rising in the industry as a whole, I think raising unit prices is a healthy option for business.”

Regardless of how players might feel about this, prices going up are inevitable. It wasn't that long ago that a copy of a Nintendo 64 title could be upwards of $90 USD. Of course, games can now be distributed digitally and the need for spending so much money on a physical product has lessened significantly since then, but it looks like prices are bound to rise for different reasons.

In many ways, there is more that a raised price would provide for studios. Industry-wide layoffs have been more and more common as time passes and the results of development are expected to look different year after year. Raised prices could help sustain these studios for longer and help them better pay their associates, as Tsujimoto implies. While it will become harder to justify higher price points for games, it's hard not to imagine just what might come out of studios following that additional revenue and how long it will last until prices need to be raised again.
