Borderlands 4 Release Might Come Sooner Than Expected

Borderlands might release sooner than 2026
by Tit Krajnik on September 30, 2023

Gearbox Software has yet to talk about the release date of Borderlands 4, so many believed that the game would follow the same seven-year release pattern of Borderlands 2 (2012) and Borderlands 3 (2019). However, while 2026 seems the most obvious release year, the Borderlands 4 release date might be sooner than expected.

Seven years passed between the release of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3. Between the two games, we did get Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Borderlands Legends, and Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, which made the wait a bit more bearable, but four years after the release of Borderlands 3, it’s fair to start asking when are we getting Borderlands 4?.

If Gearbox Software decides to follow the same pattern as with Borderlands 2 and 3, then Borderlands 4 will be out in three years, in 2026. However, it seems like the pattern will be broken with the fourth title.

Thanks to Nicolas Rudowski’s LinkedIn page, which shows him working on Borderlands between November 2021 and April 2023, we now know that Borderlands 4 has been in development for nearly three years. However, it’s likely that it’s been much longer than that, assuming Rudowski hasn’t joined the team straight at the start of the development. Still, it’s fair to say that Borderlands 4 has been in development for at least a solid two years.

And considering AAA games usually take three to five years to complete, it’s fair to speculate that Borderlands 4 will be released sooner than the initially expected 2026.

At this point, this is all speculation and nothing more than that. It’s entirely likely that Borderlands 4 will be released in 2024 or 2025; it could follow the same pattern and come out in 2026, or Gearbox Software could take longer than that and release it later. But while there are no correct answers, an earlier release seems likely.
