Nintendo Says Account Transitions To Next Consoles Will Be Possible

Buy your games in peace now.
by Natalie Collazo on October 20, 2023

One of Nintendo's biggest faults is that their digital libraries never seem to transfer over to the next console, making it nearly impossible to keep anything that was purchased on consoles like the Wii and the Wii U. According to Doug Bowser, players will be able to transfer their content seamlessly to whatever the next console they're cooking up is. He emphasizes that having a Nintendo Account is going to be incredibly important in making that happen.

He said in a recent interview with Inverse,

"In the past, every device we transitioned to had a whole new account system. Creating the Nintendo Account will allow us to communicate with our players if and when we make a transition to a new platform, to help ease that process or transition. Our goal is to minimize the dip you typically see in the last year of one cycle and the beginning of another. I can’t speak to the possible features of a new platform, but the Nintendo Account is a strong basis for having that communication as we make the transition."

He didn't make any specifications about what that means, or anything about what the next generation of consoles will even be like. However, this discussion has always been one that has weighed heavily on fans of their consoles. Just recently the Nintendo 3DS was another of their consoles to see their digital stores close and become completely inaccessible to those who purchased games unless they are downloaded to the console.

Nintendo seems to be the only company among the big three that doesn't do this. Xbox and PlayStation has ensured that players are able to access their games from as far back as the PlayStation 3 and original Xbox. In fact, Xbox prided itself at one point in being able to play almost any and all original Xbox and Xbox 360 physical games on their most current consoles. It's interesting that Nintendo doesn't hop on the trend considering the way that they handled the end of the GameBoy when the DS released with a GameBoy slot and the Wii gave players the option to play GameCube games.

It has been previously stated that any and all information about a sequel to the famous Nintendo Switch wouldn't be announced until 2024.
