Destiny 2: The Final Shape Gets Delayed

It won’t release until June 2024
by Tit Krajnik on November 29, 2023

On November 27, the game developer Bungie confirmed that Destiny 2: The Final Shape will be delayed. The expansion, which was originally planned to be released on February 27, 2024, got pushed back to June 2024 to "allow for an even bigger and bolder vision."

Reasons for the delay include the expansion needing more work and time to become what Bungie truly wants the multi-player shooter game to be. Its apparent that the development team behind it believe this is achievable by adding an extra four months to the development process.

Additional Reasons Behind the Setback

Bungie is on a mission to ensure that The Final Shape rolls out exactly how it wishes. One reason, in particular, is that, "The Final Shape is the culmination of the first ten years of Destiny storytelling and, for Guardians everywhere, countless hours spent together,” according to Bungie in a blog post.

Additionally, the official announcement of the expansion delay comes shortly after it was reported that Bungie has significantly downsized its team (in late November). Bungie addressed the layoffs in a statement, acknowledging that it was a difficult week for the company.

According to Bungie CEO Pete Parsons, the layoffs were due to the game's underperformance over the year and the low preorder numbers for the game's expansion.

Moreover, the company discussed the mixed reception of the recent Lightfall expansion, which also led the destiny 2 team to invest more resources in making The Final Shape better and an “unforgettable experience” for players to enjoy and invest countless hours in.

The Final Shape Expansion

Final Shape Expansion to Open Another Destination

The Final Shape was announced in late August 2023, immediately promising to deliver new content and a new destination called "Pale Heart" for players to explore.

Pale Heart will serve as the main location for Destiny 2, featuring similar and new locations with a unique twist - as continuously evolving destinations of old locations. It is poised to be the culmination of the first ten years of Destiny and conclude the Light and Darkness saga.

Moreover, another big change for Final Shape in season two is the inclusion of an episodic format destiny storytelling journey, which will ditch the previous structure of releasing a new season four times per year.

While the delay of the Destiny 2 expansion is hardly good news, it's exciting to hear that the initial release date was moved for improvements, making the final version more intriguing.

Until then, Bungie plans to deliver additional content - one of which is called Into the Light, said to "prepare players for their journey into the light of the Traveller."
