Skyrim's New Update: Paid Mods Return

Skyrim modders will be able to generate income via 'Creations'
by Tit Krajnik on December 06, 2023

Bethesda Games announced on Tuesday, December 6, the return of Skyrim paid mods in the form of “Creations”, stating the feature provides a new way for players to engage in the game. It enables modders to apply to be a part of the "Verified Creator Program", enabling them to set prices for their Creations.

According to the announcement, the paid mods are returning to improve the players' experience and, ultimately, to provide modders with a chance to earn money by selling their Skyrim mods. While mod authors can still upload free creations, the new "Creation Club" returned with more features and mod tools, offering modders more up-to-date ways to earn revenue.

"In continuing to evolve with the Skyrim community, we are excited to announce Bethesda Game Creations, an updated way for players to discover, download and play community-made content. Creations combines Skyrim’s existing Mods, Creation Club items and all-new Creations under a single Creations menu available for players to browse today in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition."

"Creators can put up their own Creations for players to enjoy or even apply to the Bethesda Game Studios Verified Creator Program to set prices for their Creations. That’s right: become a Verified Creator, and you could earn a royalty for each of your Creations sold within Skyrim Special Edition."

A Controversial Feature Returns

The new feature of its system is not something new in Skyrim, as it already featured in 2017 as the controversial Creation Club. At the time, Bethesda was charging for trivial things, such as simple quests. Unlike the Creation Club, the new Creations seem to offer more variety, including voiced followers, graphical updates and much more.

Besheda previously released a FAQ for paid modders, confirming that the Creations will bundle all existing mods and Creation Club content with the other mods and new creations. But while Creations seems like an upgrade to the old mods system, the announcement didn't go down well among Skyrim players, owing to the Creation Club proving to be a fluke. Therefore, players assume Creations will follow the same mistakes as the Creation Club content.

Interestingly, the Creation Club content remained operational and allowed modders to charge for their content despite Besheda managing to prevent Steam from allowing modders to get paid for their creations via the Steam workshop.

Yet, while there are some concerns about the system, most players are not happy with the decision to add paid mods. However, it's important to remember that among all the available paid mods, creators can also offer other mods for free.

Those who are not fans of paying for Skyrim mods can still visit various websites, such as Nexus Mods, which offers free mods for the game. So even though there are some concerns with how the Creation will work out and whether or not it will benefit the game, there are other ways to access Skyrim mods for free
