League of Legends New Champion Smolder Receives a Visual Update

Smolder didn't look dragon enough.
by Tit Krajnik on January 06, 2024

Just one day after the reveal of a new League of Legends champion, Smolder, Riot announced it is changing his face. As revealed, Smolder's face will be adjusted slightly, highlighting more dragon-like features.

Riot Games was quick to respond to community criticism over Smolder's design, which, according to the players, didn't look up to par. To fix the mistakes, Riot's lead champion producer Alexia "Lexical" Gao confirmed that the team re-designed Smolder's face and enhanced some of the most notable features on his face.

Smolder Lacked Some Facial Features

In response to the community backlash over Smolder's face design, League of Legends lead champion producer Lexical stated that the team heard the feedback and will introduce some adjustments to highlight Smolder's dragon features. Moreover, Riot will update Smolder's splash art to reflect the changes.

"We heard your feedback on Smolder's face and are making some adjustments to highlight his dragon features. The splash team is working on some adjustments too!"

This decision comes less than a day after a champion reveal, which portrayed Smolder as an enthusiastic hatchling with a fiery soul. While the reveal was accepted well by the community, who can't wait to get their hands on the new champion, some quickly pointed out that Smolder's face looked too uncanny and similar to Spyro from the movie Sonic the Hedgehog.

Riot seems to agree with the community and decides to fix Smolder's face, adding more detailed skin, tougher-looking scales, and more bone structure, improving the design of a new dragon-like champion.

With a facelift, Smolder is now ready to enter the Summoner's Rift; however, it'll take a bit longer before the players get their hands on a new champion. As confirmed by Riot Games, Smolder won't be released to live servers until the 2024 season kicks off, so Smolder won't be added to the game until at least January 24.
