Riot is Considering Re-Adding Duo Queue For LoL Ranked Play

Duoing might be coming back, but not for all regions
by Tit Krajnik on January 19, 2024

In 2021, Riot Games removed the due queue for ranked Master and above, which affected a small yet loyal group of players, including professional League of Legends players. However, as hinted in a Reddit AMA, Riot is considering re-adding the feature soon.

In a Reddit AMA, League of Legends design director August “Iksar” Dean Ayala confirmed that the developers are considering re-opening the duo queue for high-ranked players. However, Riot has yet to pull the trigger on the decision, mainly due to differing opinions from communities around the world.

Iksar explained that while Riot is open to re-adding the feature, they’re currently consulting with different LoL regions to find common ground. Alternatively, Riot Games is prepared to set different rules for each region.

“Considering opening up duo-queue for masters tier in addition to diamond and below. Consulting with different regions who tend to have different opinions on this topic. We're open to different regions having different rules if necessary.”

Duo Queue or No Duo Queue

Since Riot Games removed duo queue for Masters and above, the community shared mixed opinions on the decision. Yet, it seems like the majority were against it, namely pro players.

On the other side, many believe that duo queue makes it much harder to climb the ladder for solo players, who don’t have the luxury of communicating with a premade teammate.

There are valid points coming from both sides. And while solo players are unquestionably at a disadvantage when meeting premade duos, duo queueing does make playing the game more entertaining and benefits pro players, who get to practice the game with their teammates.

Riot Games allowed duo queue in Challenger rank in 2018, mainly to help pro players; however, the developer didn’t intend to make duoing mandatory to reach higher ranks. This was one of the reasons why Riot decided to remove duo queue, as it ultimately made climbing the ranks harder for all solo players.

Riot has yet to officially state when the duo queue will return, and there is no confirmation that it ever will. However, according to Iksar’s statements, Riot is exploring ways to re-add the feature in the near future.
