Johanna Faries Named New President of Blizzard Entertainment

Johanna Faries replaces Mike Ybarra
by Tit Krajnik on January 29, 2024

Less than a week following massive layoffs at Blizzard Entertainment, which led to the departure of nearly 1,900 employees, including now-former president Mike Ybarra, Blizzard announced his successor, Johanna Faries.

Faries, who worked for the National Football League (NFL) for 12 years for 12 years, joined Activision in 2018 as a Call of Duty esports head before transitioning to the general manager position of the franchise.

Faries Acknowledges The Differences Between Two Companies

According to reports, Frasier emailed the company after being appointed as the president. In the email, she acknowledged the previous conflict between Blizzard and Activision regarding the desire for Blizzard to work on their own projects how they’d like without wanting to be more like Activision.

Due to the difference between the two companies, Frasier stated that she is stepping into her new role, understanding the differences in the dynamics, and is committed to doing everything she can to help Blizzard thrive with consideration of the different games Activision and Blizzard produce.

“Activision, Blizzard, and King are decidedly different companies with distinct games, cultures, and communities. It is important to note that Call of Duty’s way of waking up in the morning to deliver for players can often differ from the stunning games in Blizzard’s realm: each with different gameplay experiences, communities that surround them, and requisite models of success. I’ve discussed this with the Blizzard leadership team and I’m walking into this role with sensitivity to those dynamics, and deep respect for Blizzard, as we begin to explore taking our universes to even higher heights.”

“I am committed to doing everything I can to help Blizzard thrive, with care and consideration for you and for our games, each unique and special in their own right. I’m optimistic about our ability to serve our current and future player communities, and to further amplify the shared passion for greatness, polish, and creative mastery that is a hallmark of Blizzard’s approach to game-making.”

According to Johanna Faries, she will start her new role on Monday, February 5.

The appointment of a former CoD esports executive will likely bring huge changes for Blizzard’s esports games, such as Overwatch and World of Warcraft, and help games across both companies continue to thrive.
