The Next Call of Duty Will Embrace Open-World Campaign

Call of Duty will stick with open-world campaigns
by Tit Krajnik on February 06, 2024

The next Call of Duty, rumored to be named CoD: Black Ops Gulf War, is set to introduce an open-world campaign, building on the new idea introduced in MW3. However, unlike Modern Warfare 3, the next installment of the series intends to build its campaign from the ground up.

According to recent reports, the new Call of Duty campaign will be open-world, similar to what was introduced with Modern Warfare 3, where the players were tasked with objectives on repurposed Warzone maps. However, after the MW3 campaign was met with waves of criticism, the next CoD intends to introduce something new rather than recycling old content.

Open-World Campaign Returns to CoD

The news of open world campaign might be concerning to some players, considering what a flop it was in Modern Warfare 3. It let players experience open-world combat and missions; however, many complained that the campaigns were blatant copy-paste from Warzone maps in an effort to stretch out the storyline.

The new campaign supposedly won't make the same mistake, as it is planned to be built from the ground up by Warzone's main developers, Raven Software.

As stated, the new campaign will have players and their squads navigate an open-world map, which is similar to Far Cry maps, introducing something bigger and better to CoD players. Beyond 2024, the plan is to stick with the idea of open-world campaigns and possibly introduce maps that are separated into different locations/biomes.

When Does CoD 2025 Release?

While some information about the next CoD title is available, a lot less is known about Call of Duty 2025. The game doesn't have an official name yet, and as reported, it doesn't even have a lead developer.

Based on leaks, Treyarch is working on CoD 2024 but hasn’t been confirmed to be involved with CoD 2025. Sledgehammer Games won’t work on CoD 2025 after they refused to become a two-year support studio. Set to release in November 2025, CoD 2025 is on track to have a very short development time – similar to what happened with Modern Warfare 3, which had its fair share of issues because of it.

As previously reported, Sledgehammer Games was forced to finish MW3 in 16 months – which was the shortest development time for a CoD title in years. While the devs denied the claims, MW3's short campaign indicated that the game had a shorter development.

The CoD 2025 developer has not been confirmed yet, but there are speculations that it will end up being a Treyarch Games product.
