Blizzard Announces WoW Plunderstorm, a World of Warcraft Battle Royale Mode

A Battle Royale twist to a MMO game
by Tit Krajnik on March 19, 2024

After weeks of waiting, Blizzard finally shared more information about the secretive World of Warcraft 10.2.6 patch, which will be much more than a minor update for the game. While patch 10.2.6 will introduce some balancing changes, it’ll also bring WoW Plunderstorm, a new battle royale game mode for World of Warcraft.

Today’s announcement of World of Warcraft’s 10.2.6 patch caught many players off guard as pirate-themed Plunderstorm mode enters the game, introducing a new twist to the MMO title. The patch will launch today, on Tuesday, March 19, for North America and Wednesday, March 20, for European servers, and here’s all we know about it.

What Is WoW Plunderstorm?

Plunderstorm games will last from 10-15 minutes as a 60-player epic battle until the last man standing. The mode will take place in the Arathi Highlands, promising “plenty of challenges to keep you busy.”

The game will feature lootable spells, abilities, and upgrades, which will be “plundered” in treasure chests and collected by defeating enemies. Once picked up, the spells will be automatically added to the player’s action bars, with two slots dedicated to offensive spells and two for utility spells such as leaps, crowd control, and speed boosts.

Players can also ugrade their abilities by discovering higher-quality versions from treasure chests or by finding the same ability and upgrading it up to rank 3.

The game mode will be playable either solo or in a group of two players, allowing players to either group up with their friends or queue and get matched with a teammate.

World of Warcraft Plunderstorm marks the first time the battle royale game mode will appear in World of Warcraft, indicating a new direction Blizzard intends to take its massively popular game. As confirmed, however, the mode will not be on standard servers or use existing characters but rather be a stand-alone game mode for players to explore and enjoy World of Warcraft differently.

Plunderstorm will award various cosmetic rewards, a Parrot mount, and pets, which will be available for both WoW: Dragonflight (retail) and WoW Classic players.

As confirmed, WoW Plunderstorm will play out slightly differently from what players are used to from World of Warcraft. It has clearly been influenced by Spellbreak, which allows players to pick up spells and use them to fight other players.

While this is only speculative, Blizzard acquired the Proletariat studio in 2022 and most of its members, who likely influenced the development of WoW Plunderstorm.

North American WoW players will get to explore Plunderstorm on Tuesday, March 19, whereas the patch will launch on European servers a day later, on Wednesday, March 20, following a scheduled maintenance.
