Riot Games MMO Gets Delayed

League of Legends MMO is going dark for several years
by Tit Krajnik on March 20, 2024

In a recent Tweet Riot Games co-founder and chief product officer Marc “Tryndamere” Merrill announced that the development for League of Legends MMO has been reset after the company decided to take it in a new direction. This means that the game won’t be ready to launch for at least several years, significantly delaying the initial release schedule.

Although Riot has never publicly announced the League of Legends MMO release window, it was previously confirmed that Riot has been working on the game for some time. This led to speculations that the game might be ready in 2025 or 2026.

However, as confirmed by Tryndamere, this won’t be the case.

Riot Games Hits a Reset Button on League of Legends MMO Development

In a Twitter post, Riot Games co-founder and chief product officer Marc “Tryndamere” Merrill provided an update on the heavily anticipated League of Legends MMO. Unfortunately, the news wasn’t positive.

As explained by Tryndamere, Riot Games decided to reset the project's direction a long time ago after the developers realized that the initial vision wasn’t different enough from “what you can play today.”

In Riot’s mind,  the LoL MMO should provide something new for the players, who would enjoy something never seen before. Ultimately, Riot Games intends to meet the incredibly high expectations of players around the world.

This proved to be a massive challenge, which required Riot to hit a reset button on the development of the game and start from scratch.

As part of the announcement, Tryndamere also revealed that Fabrice Condominas, who previously worked at BioWare and EA, will be the new executive producer of the game. Meanwhile, the former executive producer Vijay Thakkar will take over the reins as a technical director.

A Unexpected Turn Of Events

In 2023, Merrill assured the fans that Riot Games’ MMO was on track to be released as initially planned, even after Riot VP Greg Street's departure. At the time, Merrill expressed his confidence in the project and its direction but also stated that the game was still in the very early stages of development and far from the actual release date.

The latest news now pushes the release date even further – significantly. In the Tweet, Merrill stated that the team would be “going dark” for several years, meaning there would be no information available about the game for quite some time.

When League of Legends MMO will be released is a complete mystery. But understanding the time it takes to develop an MMO, it’s fair to expect a release window closer to 2030.
