Blizzard Introduces New Account Restrictions on Season of Discovery

by Tit Krajnik on April 10, 2024

On Tuesday, April 9, Blizzard announced a new account restriction for World of Warcraft: Season of Discovery. The restriction will prevent new accounts from trading or using the auction house until 30 days of paid subscription has passed.

Botting in World of Warcraft has long been a big issue, and it’s not exclusive to the retail version. Especially in WoW: Classic and WoW: Season of Discovery, where gold is far more valuable, botting and gold farming have had hugely negative effects on the game’s economy – despite Blizzard’s attempts to crack down on shady activities.

In a new attempt to prevent bots and gold farmers from negatively affecting the game, Blizzard announced a restriction on all new accounts in World of Warcraft: Season of Discovery. However, the same restrictions also have some negative effects on new players.

New Account Restrictions in WoW: SoD

On Tuesday, April 9, Blizzard introduced a new system to World of Warcraft: Season of Discovery, preventing all new accounts from trading with other characters, using the auction house, or sending and receiving in-game mail.

The restriction will persist until the accounts have had a paid subscription for at least 30 days. This means that all new WoW: Season of Discovery players won’t be able to trade, send emails, or use the auction house for one month after paying for the game.

The new system was added for a similar reason as last year’s restriction on WoW Token purchases. And while it is one way to battle the ongoing gold farming and botting issue, it also affects regular players.

Even those who’ve already had accounts found themselves unable to trade, send in-game mails, or use the auction house if they’ve not been subscribed to the game for at least 30 days. Since the new change works retroactively, all players who’ve recently joined WoW: SoD are blocked from using the features.

There are two important things to note about the new system:

  • The restrictions apply only to Season of Discovery servers and not to WoW: Dragonflight, Hardcore, or Classic Era servers.
  • A minimum of 30 days (elapsed time) is needed for the restrictions to be removed from the account.

The Second System to Battle Botting and Goldfarming

The new account restrictions have been implemented for the same reason as the WoW Token restriction in November 2023, which required players to buy at least one month of subscription time to be able to interact with the in-game mechanics.
While the token restriction wasn’t as impactful, the recently introduced system isn’t as innocent.

The new restrictions are very punishing for new WoW players, preventing them from engaging in core MMORPG mechanics despite not doing anything malicious. However, as frustrating as the new rules can be for new players, Blizzard felt like the restrictions had to be added to better the game long-term.
