Heroic Raid Week Returns in World of Warcraft: The War Within

It's a good thing, probably
by Tit Krajnik on April 17, 2024

The War Within, the next expansion of World of Warcraft, which is set to launch in summer 2024, has been a hot topic of discussion among WoW fans for months. Ever since it was first revealed, TWW has promised to introduce a plethora of changes to the game, and another big addition was confirmed today.

In the recently finished World of Warcraft: The War Within alpha developer group interview, it was revealed that Heroic Raid Week will return at the start of the next expansion. This is great news for Raid to World First raiders and fans who missed the feature that was removed with the start of Dragonflight.

Heroic Raid Week is Back!

World of Warcraft: Dragonflight launched with many surprises, including a change to the raid release schedule. The most notable was the removal of Heroic Week.

Heroic Week was a one-week period where Mythic-tier raids and the loot pools of Mythic+ were not available. This forced Raid to World First raiders to farm Heroic-tier raids for gear in preparation for the Mythic raids.

While removing the Heroic Raid Week had its positives, namely players not being forced to farm Heroics for one week, it has been largely criticized as a terrible decision.

The big issue with the lack of Heroic Weeks was that guilds were forced to squeeze the previous one-week of farming gear into a couple of days, wanting to enter Mythic-tier raids as soon as possible and start the race. Even more concerning was the large power delta between the first and last Mythic bosses and the lack of class tuning, which typically followed Heroic Weeks.

Another problem with the lack of Heroic Weeks was that guilds were forced to go straight to Mythic in the first week of the raid without having enough time to gear up. However, most of the top guilds spent the first few days farming gear and tier sets, leaving the RWF viewers with nothing to see – aside from Normal and Heroic splits.

Heroic Raid Week has been a hot topic of discussion since it was removed at the start of World of Warcraft: Dragonflight. And after three raids, it’s easy to see why both viewers and guilds want it back.

In the interview, Michael Bybee said:

"To be a little bit more specific here. One of the considerations for the War Within is, for the first time in World of Warcraft history, we are doing an early access period for folks who are able to purchase the higher-end product, and so they'll get 3 days early access for that.

One of our very major goals with allowing that was that it didn't feel like it gave folks an advantage, especially in any power race. So that 3 day early access will give folks the ability to play through the story content, level up, get to max level but they won't have access to a lot of the Mythic 0 and other opportunities where they can get sets of gear.

Then we'll have a period where we'll actually have access to the Mythic 0 system without the Season having gone live, then the Season will start and you'll have your Heroic Week and then you'll have the rest of the content unlocked."

The return of Heroic Raid Weeks is just one of many new things coming with World of Warcraft: The War Within. The next expansion will also mark the start of a new path for WoW, as it is the first of three expansions that will be released annually and will all be part of the Worldsoul Saga.
