Project Dagger By People Can Fly Has Been Canned

This seems to be the norm lately when it comes to production and development costs.
by Natalie Collazo on April 25, 2024

People Can Fly, the developer behind Outriders, recently announced the cancellation of their upcoming action-adventure title, codenamed Project Dagger. This decision comes after a thorough "re-analysis" of the studio's development plans, leading to significant financial write-offs estimated between PLN 68.3 million and PLN 79.9 million.

What Was Project Dagger?

While specific reasons for the cancellation weren't disclosed, the studio cited "unsatisfactory results" and a redefinition of the game's development direction as key factors. As a result, all expenditures on the project have been written off from the company's accounting books as of December 31, 2023.

This move marks the end of a troubled journey for Project Dagger, which had been in development for several years. Initially co-developed with Take-Two Interactive, the partnership dissolved in September 2022. Despite CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski's optimism about the project's potential, subsequent challenges—including a shift in development direction and missed launch windows—ultimately led to its demise.

The cancellation comes amidst other developments at People Can Fly, including layoffs in early 2024 and ongoing work on projects like Project Bifrost and Project Victoria. Despite setbacks, the studio remains committed to delivering thrilling gaming experiences, while fans eagerly await news on their future endeavors.
