Treyarch and Raven Software Explain Their Approach to the Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Campaign

Treyarch and Raven Software promise new diverse mechanics, player choices and narrative depth
by Tit Krajnik on June 10, 2024

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was officially announced at Xbox Games Showcase when the developers explained more about the game. On top of revealing the trailer, gamers got some insight into Black Ops 6, including how Treyarch and Raven Software approached creating a new and more engaging singleplayer campaign.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is promised to be an intense spy thriller set in the 1990s, immediately after the events of CoD: Cold War. The game will revolve around the era when the Soviet Union disintegrated after the end of the Cold War, leaving the United States as the sole world superpower.

While the story itself drew enough attention from the games, Treyarch and Raven Software's approach to creating the campaign turned even more heads.

A New Approach to Singleplayer Campaign in CoD: Black Ops 6

As explained, the Black Ops 6 campaign will see players navigate through various illicit activities, operations, and off-the-record missions. This is a step away from past CoD missions, but beyond the change of the storyline, players can also look forward to how the storyline was designed.

Black Ops 6 promises to integrate a rich history of the previous titles, including the return of known figures from past Black Ops games, such as Frank Woods. In the new title, Wood’s protege, Troy Marshall, emerges as a new leader, and the duo works together alongside the CIA.

The missions players will have to complete include rogue operations, which will feature the return of Russel Adler.

All campaign missions were crafted by Raven Software from the ground up and promise diverse execution methods and approaches. As stated, the campaigns will emphasize player choice, which will lead to varying outcomes based on previous decisions, offering tons of replayability.

There will also be era-specific weapons and equipment, adding to the game’s depth and immersion.

Between missions, players will return to a safehouse – similar to the Berlin Safehouse from Black Ops: Cold War. However, this time, the safehouse will offer more exploration, including target practice, briefings from Frank Woods, and more.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is set to release on October 25, 2024, on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
