Ubisoft Confirms Continued Development of Delayed 'Prince of Persia: Sands of Time' Remake

It will not be released until 2026
by Joe Wilcock on June 11, 2024

During yesterday's Ubisoft Summer Game Fest showcase, the publisher acknowledged the prolonged development of its much-anticipated Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake. Despite expectations for a near-future release, Ubisoft announced that the game will not be available until sometime in 2026.

A brief teaser, unveiled at the UbiForward 2024 event, confirmed the new release timeline but provided little additional information. The teaser, while visually impressive, did not reveal significant details about the gameplay or narrative but reaffirmed the 2026 launch date.

The original Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, released in 2003, was a commercial and critical success, leading to a trilogy of sequels. In September 2020, Ubisoft announced its plans to remake the popular third-person action-platformer, with an initial release date set for 2021. However, the project faced its first delay in December 2020, followed by an indefinite postponement in February 2021. By May 2022, Ubisoft announced that Ubisoft Montreal, the original studio behind the Sands of Time trilogy, would take over the project.

Initially, it was believed that Ubisoft Montreal would build upon the previous work. However, it became clear in May 2023 that the studio had restarted the project from scratch. This revelation contributed to the significant delays and extended development timeline.

As of 2024, Ubisoft has reiterated that the game is still in development. During the Summer Game Fest, the company emphasized that time-bending mechanics and action elements would remain integral to the remake. The teaser, though short, suggested a faithful recreation of the original game's atmosphere, which may reassure long-time fans of the series.

The prolonged development has raised questions about whether the final product will justify the nearly decade-long wait. Ubisoft has faced several challenges in recent years with other projects experiencing similar delays and development issues. The company’s ability to manage and deliver on its ambitious projects remains under scrutiny.

Ubisoft's CEO, Yves Guillemot, addressed the delays during the event, stating, "We understand the anticipation and the frustrations of our fans. The Prince of Persia franchise holds a special place in our hearts, and we are committed to delivering a game that meets the high standards expected by our community."

In the meantime, Ubisoft continues to focus on other major titles and projects. The company has expressed confidence in its upcoming lineup, despite the setbacks experienced with the Prince of Persia remake.

For now, fans will have to wait until 2026 to experience the reimagined adventure of the Prince. Ubisoft’s ability to deliver on this long-delayed project will be closely watched, as it seeks to regain trust and enthusiasm from its player base.
