Bethesda Plans Annual Expansions for Starfield Following Shattered Space Release

Todd Howard reveals the future of Starfield in an interview
by Joe Wilcock on June 19, 2024

In a recent interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, Todd Howard, director at Bethesda Game Studios, confirmed that another DLC is planned to follow Shattered Space. Furthermore, Howard hinted that these expansions could become an annual tradition.

When asked about the possibility of yearly story expansions, Howard responded, "I would say more or less, how long that continues? Hopefully, a very long time. But we're already planning for one after this [Shattered Space], so there will be another one." This news is likely to be well-received by players eager for more content and answers to the many questions the game has raised.

Shattered Space promises to delve into the enigmatic House Va'ruun cult, but many players feel there are still numerous mysteries to explore. One player on Reddit noted, "Finding the center of the multiverse and never seeing an intelligent alien is kind of weird, maybe for DLC, or are future humans blocking that too. And if so, why do they allow the whole unity thing to be run like Lord of the Flies or at least very Darwinian?"

While there's no shortage of material for future expansions, Howard emphasized that answering every question isn't the primary goal. "I don't know that our goal is to answer every question," he said. "We sort of look at it and say, 'Hey, what's a good angle? What do we want to add to the game as far as an experience or tone?'"

Development on Shattered Space has been in progress for nearly 10 months, beginning shortly after the base game was completed. Howard shared, "We are doing a lot, but 'Shattered Space' is something we had planned for. And one of the things that we always liked about it from the get-go, is that 'Shattered Space,' the bulk of that expansion pack, pretty much once you get to the city and the planet, it takes place there. It allows us to build a landscape that we would traditionally do."

Howard compared the scope of Shattered Space to the Far Harbor DLC for Fallout 4, suggesting it aligns well with Bethesda's development capabilities and the concept of annual story expansions. "This is a scope that works for our development and doing this kind of annual story expansion. So we're really excited about that, and it really lets us do something the way we would in previous games," he said.

In addition to discussing future content, Howard addressed the controversy surrounding Starfield's $7 mission, acknowledging the community's dissatisfaction. "I hear the feedback," he stated. "We'll take a look at that and how we deliver content like that in the future." While his response may not fully satisfy those upset by the situation, it indicates a willingness to reconsider how similar content is handled moving forward.

Overall, Howard's comments suggest that Bethesda is committed to continuing to develop and expand Starfield with new story content, potentially on an annual basis. This approach could help keep the game fresh and engaging for players, ensuring that the rich universe they've created continues to evolve and expand.
