Netflix Has Over 80 Games in Development

Netflix reveals big plans for its Netflix Games project
by Tit Krajnik on July 20, 2024

Netflix has recently revealed that it has over 80 video games in development and aims to release at least one new game per month into its Netflix Stories app. This marks another massive development in the streaming platform's entry into the gaming industry.

The streaming platform titan has recently outlined its strategy around gaming, revealing that it has over 80 new video games in development. The news surfaced in the latest earnings brief, which also revealed that most of the new games will be based on specific Netflix IP, including the upcoming Squid game title.

Netflix Has Big Plans for the Future

In the recent Netflix earnings call, CEO Greg Peters stated that Netflix decided to get involved in gaming primarily to make money and capitalize on the industry, which accounts for over $150 billion in annual revenue, excluding all the revenue from ads. However, Netflix doesn't intend to include ads of microtransactions in their games – and instead took a different approach with its current model.

Netflix Games launched in 2021, and so far, the company has made significant progress through setting aggressive engagement growth targets, which "have been met in many cases," Peters said.

While Netflix's overall business impact remains fairly small - less than 1% of all Netflix users play games on the platform - the company expects to see exponential growth in the future.

"We've calibrated the growth in investment with the growth in the business impact. So we're being disciplined about how we scale that. So now obviously, the job is to continue to grow that engagement to the place where it has a material impact on the business."

In the Netflix earnings call, the company's representatives stated that Netflix intends to create a more diverse playing field and hopes to diversify from interactive narrative games.

"Starting this month, in July, we're going to launch about one new title per month into Netflix Stories. And this is amazing IP like "Emily in Paris" and "Selling Sunset." And we have lots more, including very different types of games yet to come in the quarters and years ahead."

So far, Netflix has released over 100 games and intends to add at least 80 more, which are already in development. While most games have been show and movie-themed, many indie developers have decided to join the platform as a staging ground to bring their creating to life.

Netflix's project is not that much different from what Microsoft intends to achieve with its Game Pass. While Netflix still has a long way to go, the company clearly has big plans and resources to accomplish them.

Just recently, former Halo and Destiny boss Joseph Staten joined Netflix to work on a AAA game based on an original IP, but not much beyond that is known.
